With the myriad of features present in cloth diapers today, it can be difficult to decide which ones work for you! In this series, we go through each distinctive feature for you to decide what works for you.
Tummy panels are a a PUL (polyurethane laminate) or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) layer sewn on the inside of the diaper. It sits just below baby's belly button.
Why are tummy panels important?
It can be tricky to make sure that diaper linings are always pushed inside the diaper, and in diapers without this panel, sometimes the lining creeps out of the diaper and causes clothes to get wet. When a tummy panel is sewn in, the wicking layer gets tucked safely inside the diaper and prevents urine from wicking onto clothing.
Who benefits most from tummy panels?
Tummy panels are great for babies who are heavy wetters or side sleepers. Now that they're so common, choose these pockets for long car rides, night diapers or even everyday wear. If you still experience leaks with a diaper that has tummy panels, try boosting the absorbency with a natural fiber insert made of hemp, cotton or bamboo and avoiding microfibre, which is known to cause compression leaks.
